As the year draws to a close, many of us reflect on the moments that brought us joy, whether they were big milestones or simple pleasures. Here’s a fun little secret: research suggests that 90% of our joy doesn’t come from the big moment itself, but from anticipating it.
Think about it—how often have you felt a rush of happiness just imagining an upcoming trip, a holiday gathering, or even a quiet weekend plan? The joy of “looking forward to something” often outweighs the actual experience. This isn’t just a quirky fact; it’s a powerful tool we can use to cultivate happiness year-round.
Anticipation fuels hope and excitement, giving us a mental “happiness boost.” It keeps us motivated and engaged, even on tough days. It’s a way of telling our brains, “There’s something good ahead.” And the best part? You can have it all the time—if you know how to use it.
How can you use anticipation to your advantage?
To create more moments of joy, make it a priority to always have something to look forward to. Here are a few ideas:
- Plan Small and Big Events: It doesn’t have to be extravagant—a coffee date with a friend or an evening dedicated to your favorite hobby can work wonders.
- Create Rituals: Start traditions that you can look forward to weekly, like a Sunday walk, a Friday movie night, or journaling on Monday mornings.
- Mark Your Calendar: Write down meaningful events or personal milestones you want to celebrate in the new year.
- Practice “Micro-Anticipation”: Even looking forward to the little things—like your morning coffee or a good book—can bring joy to your daily routine.
How about a December Happiness Challenge?
This month, I challenge you to become an “anticipation architect.” Write down three things you’re excited about in December—and don’t hold back. It could be wrapping gifts (with hot chocolate in hand, obviously), watching your favorite holiday movie, or having a holiday-themed brunch with friends.
The trick?
Get all that you can out of the excitement! Daydream, plan, and talk about it. Let the joy build before the moment arrives. Something that has helped me be present and daydream is coloring! I have found it to really bring me peace – “creating over consuming” can be really powerful in giving your mind a moment to rest, dream, and find positivity.
Because the truth is, happiness isn’t just in the doing—it’s in the dreaming.
Don’t stop dreaming.
So, here’s to a December filled with joy, laughter, and plenty to look forward to. Let’s make the rest of this year feel magical!
Let this blog be a reminder that anticipation is an untapped resource for happiness. So often, we chase after big events or achievements, thinking they’re the key to our joy. But the real gold lies in how we frame those moments before they happen.
Imagine building a life where you always have something to look forward to—not just holidays or milestones, but everyday moments. The small, intentional rituals create a sense of stability and happiness even in chaos.
If you’re struggling to find joy, this practice of anticipation can be especially powerful. It’s not about creating false hope but about discovering how to savor life in advance. You deserve to wake up every day with something to be excited about, no matter how small.
