When we were children, we all knew what we wanted to do. We wanted to play. We wanted to have fun, and we would achieve this fun by any means necessary. As adults, many of us have given up on creating that fun. We simply do not know how to play anymore. It’s not surprising that adults have forgotten how to have fun. In general, life is filled with many, not fun things like paying bills, driving in traffic, and going to the post office. These things have to be done, but I don’t think most people would consider them fun. I personally try to get out of running errands any time I possibly can. (Sidenote: can we give a quick shout-out to all of the innovative services that have become a part of our lives, like Instacart, Postmates, and DoorDash!? Thank God for them!) I digress. How do we get more fun in our everyday lives? The first thing we have to do is identify what we consider to be fun.

When was the last time you did something just for the sake of doing it? You were not worried about time or the items on your to-do list. It was just about being in and enjoying the moment. It is not often we have those opportunities because of the way we have set up our lives.

We are chronically busy and missing opportunities to play and have fun. But today, we can change that and create healthy additions to our schedule.

Take a seat and a deep breath and think about when, where, and how this good time was had. Can you make it happen again? What would that take? Let’s say you have been adulting so long and hard that you cannot think of the last time you played and had fun; that is just fine. We are going to figure it out.

Take a seat and take a deep breath. But instead of trying to remember the fun you have previously had, I want you to think about what you would do if you woke up tomorrow with no responsibilities for a week. What would be the first thing you would do? And the next? What about the thing after that? I want you to think about what you would do for a whole week.

This exercise may sound silly, but we don’t often give ourselves permission to daydream and plan; that is what we are doing when we are allowed to have our thoughts that are not attached to something on our “to-do” list. That is why we have no idea of what we think is fun.

Once you have either remembered the last time you had fun or thought about what you would do if you had a week to yourself, create the closest experience you can to those experiences. Use your imagination and your resources to create fun in your life.
